Genentech-UCSF School of Pharmacy Diversity Fellowship opens doors for PhD careers in industry

Emerging scientists from underrepresented backgrounds at UC San Francisco will soon be able to supplement their training with exclusive internships at Genentech, a member of the Roche Group. Considered the founder of the biotech industry, Genentech is dedicated to pursuing groundbreaking science to discover and develop medicines for people with serious and life-threatening diseases.

The Genentech-UCSF School of Pharmacy Diversity Fellowship will sponsor two UCSF PhD students each year to conduct a summer of research in a Genentech laboratory and to participate in activities with Genentech scientists throughout their fellowship year. Fellows will gain professional experience in an industry setting, preparing them for careers in the private sector and enabling them to make more informed career decisions.

Students will be selected for the fellowship after completing their PhD candidacy exams, typically at the end of their second year, starting in 2023. They will be drawn from graduate programs supported by School of Pharmacy faculty including Chemistry and Chemical Biology, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics, Bioinformatics, and Biophysics.

“The path from a rigorous academic training to a job in biotech or pharma isn’t always straightforward,” said Kathy Giacomini, PhD, BSPharm, dean of the School of Pharmacy. “This fellowship will give talented students from underrepresented groups the opportunity to hone their skills in an industry setting and make the connections they need for fulfilling, life-long careers in science.”

Fellows will host a seminar series that will bring Genentech scientists to UCSF to speak about their research and industry careers. Fellows will also give presentations to the UCSF graduate student community about their experience in the program upon concluding their summer of research.
