Dean Kathy Giacomini, PhD, BSPharm, leads the creation and implementation of the School’s strategic agenda and ensures the School has the operational framework and resources required to succeed. She is the School’s public voice, articulating its vision, its plans for the future, and its passion for precise therapeutics—as seen in its work from basic science to health policy.

As dean, she works closely with UC San Francisco’s chancellor and other campus leaders as part of the campus leadership team to create the conditions for this diverse campus to work as “One UCSF” and, in doing so, further succeed in leading revolutions in health.

UCSF and UC administrations

The School of Pharmacy is one of several main university entities alongside the Chancellor’s Office, School of Dentistry, School of Medicine, School of Nursing, Graduate Division, and UCSF Health. The School is under the administrative oversight of the dean, who reports to the UCSF chancellor, who reports to the UC president, who is accountable to the Regents of the University of California.

UCSF is intensely collaborative. As a result, department faculty members work with colleagues in research, education, and patient care programs across UCSF.

The UCSF School of Pharmacy is led by the dean, who oversees the Dean’s Office, three departments, and a research institute. Each of these support the School’s mission and goals in research, education, and patient care. A Dean’s Leadership Group advises the dean.

The School’s faculty is represented through the shared governance model of the Academic Senate, and in particular through the School of Pharmacy Faculty Council, and Senate and School committees.

Dean’s Office

The Dean’s Office of the UCSF School of Pharmacy carries out the strategic priorities of the dean across research, patient care, and education, and supports and collaborates with the School’s departments and other units.
