Giacomini to lead $15.1 million in research funding to improve the use of drugs in individuals

Kathy Giacomini, PhD, co-chair of the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences and an expert in the field of pharmacogenomics, is leading two research projects funded by two grants totaling $15.1 million over the next five years to expand research into how genes affect an individual's response to medication and to strengthen a global network of researchers involved in these efforts. The grants are the largest portion of a $161.3 million total effort by the National Institutes of Health to expand a national collaboration of scientists known as the Pharmacogenomics Research Network with the goal of paving the way for personalized medicine.
