I teach health profession trainees and practitioners about how to best use antibiotics, and I consult in the care of patients with complex infections. I study how clinicians and hospitals use antibiotics to help identify ways that antibiotics can be used most effectively while preserving their value for future generations.

I serve as Vice Dean of the School of Pharmacy and lead all aspects of School administration in the absence of the dean. My specific responsibilities are to oversee the education and diversity initiatives of the School.

My focus is on evolving health policy issues affecting patient safety and pharmacy practice. I am particularly interested in introducing more humanistic elements in health professional education, such as compassion and empathy via affective learning and reflection.

Marcus Ferrone, PharmD, JD

My research focuses on the drug formulation aspects of hyperpolarized carbon-13 for magnetic resonance imaging. In addition to sterile drug development research, I am particularly interested in the regulatory climate that impacts both pharmacy compounding and industrial manufacturing. Collaborating with internal and external partners committed to creating cutting-edge advances in pharmaceutical science education also plays an important role in my academic position.

Robin Corelli, PharmD

I am a Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and a licensed practicing pharmacist. My research and practice efforts have been focused on the community pharmacist’s role as an advocate for positive health outcomes through disease prevention and treatment. This includes work in the areas of asthma, COPD, tobacco cessation, immunization delivery, and medication therapy management.

Kirsten Balano, PharmD

My clinical work is focused on HIV adherence, ambulatory care services, and health-care delivery systems, particularly within community health centers. As the North Bay Program Director and AIDS Education and Training Center faculty member, I am also interested in developing effective education and teaching strategies for developing clinical practice skills. These include motivational interviewing, adult learning theory, and interactive skill building workshops.

Mitra Assemi, PharmD

I am the Associate Dean for Assessment and Quality Improvement. In this role, I focus on quality assurance and quality improvement for the Doctor of Pharmacy degree program. I am also an Experiential Program Director for the School’s Fresno program, one of six sites in California where Doctor of Pharmacy students complete their experiential requirements. In this role, I am responsible for developing and delivering the courses and experiences students complete during their time in Fresno.

Donald Kishi, PharmD

As Associate Dean, I mentor, advise, and work closely with School of Pharmacy Doctor of Pharmacy students and faculty members to monitor and support the successful progress of students in the PharmD program who entered in 2017 and before. I advise student organizations including the Associated Students of the School of Pharmacy, the Academy of Student Pharmacists, and Community Outreach Student Alliance, and I provide guidance and approval for student community health events. I work closely with the UCSF Pharmacy Alumni Association to ensure a close and continuing connection between our alumni and pharmacy students. I co-coordinate the School’s education training partnership with Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences and carry out special projects for the Dean and Vice Dean.

Recently, I received the UCSF School of Pharmacy Alumni Association's 2017 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year and the UCSF Alumni Association 2019 Dedicated Award.
