The UCSF School of Pharmacy community mourns the passing of Peter Ambrose, PharmD ’80, an esteemed faculty member in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy.
Peter was the program director for Los Angeles and Orange County area clerkships—the advanced pharmacy practice experiences (APPEs) undertaken by student pharmacists in their third and fourth years—and served as the Department’s vice chair of experiential programs. Indeed, he was among the principal faculty members involved in the original effort that created the School’s satellite programs throughout California, thus providing advanced practice opportunities for UCSF student pharmacists, spreading the concepts of clinical pharmacy practice, and expanding clinical pharmacy services in the state.
Among his many professional achievements, Peter was the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Pharmacist of the Year in 2012. The award recognized him for his “significant and sustained contributions to pharmacy practice in California.”
In addition to his prior pharmacokinetics service at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, his expertise in sports pharmacy—such as drug testing policies and procedures—took him to state, national, and international competitions, and included serving as a Doping Control Officer at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, Sydney, and Beijing.
Peter was an outstanding educator, who taught clinical pharmacokinetics and a wide range of preceptor development programs. He received the School’s student-voted Long Foundation Award for Excellence in Teaching five times as well the Long Beach Memorial Medical Center pharmacy residents’ Preceptor of the Year Award multiple times.
As Department Chair Lisa Kroon, PharmD, and Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, wrote: “While we acknowledge Peter’s professionalism, we will particularly miss his genuine warmth, his contagious laugh, and his consistent willingness to lend a hand to those in need.”
A funeral mass is set for Saturday, July 23 at 12:30 pm at Our Lady of Refuge, 5195 E. Stearns Street, Long Beach, CA.
