Department mourns the passing of Professor Urquhart
By Les Benet, Kathy Giacomini, and Carl Peck / Mon Apr 11, 2016
John Urquhart, MD, passed away on March 19, 2016. Urquhart was an adjunct professor in the Department Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences at the UCSF School of Pharmacy. He was best known for pioneering the science of medication adherence and for development of innovative electronic technologies and metrics to assess patient compliance with self-medication during clinical trials.
During his long career, John held professorships at the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Southern California, and Maastricht University, and was Chief Scientist at Alza Corporation. John received many honors during his career, including doctor of science, honoris causa, from Utrecht University in recognition of “outstanding contributions to the field of pharmacoepidemiology in the Netherlands.”
John was a friend and colleague to many on the BTS faculty and regularly attended events sponsored by the department. He provided inspirational lectures in the BTS-sponsored American Course in Drug Development and Regulatory Sciences (ACDRS).
On behalf of the entire department, flowers and our condolences were sent to his wife, Joan.
John will be dearly missed by all of us.
