It was just announced that 8 of the 9 officers involved in Breonna Taylor’s murder will face no charges. The only one that will, will not face charges for her murder, but for the property that was destroyed by his bullets. The murders of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, and Ahmaud Arbery sent shockwaves throughout the world and through all of us. It is important to recognize these individuals and the countless others that have lost their lives to police brutality as the driving force that brought the movement to UCSF. It is also important to recognize that the systems in place that have allowed these injustices to occur are the same racist, ableist, classist systems that have created barriers to admission into academia for underrepresented individuals.

Two months ago, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry formed a long overdue diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) committee. Our working goals are: to increase representation in the department, to recruit and retain faculty, students, staff, postdocs, and trainees from underrepresented backgrounds through the support of the department, to educate ourselves and the department on these systems of oppression and barriers to success, and to create lasting relationships with the neighboring underserved communities in the Bay Area and to provide STEM opportunities to the youth in these communities.

While there are a multitude of taskforces on campus to address these issues, positioning our committee at the department-level gives us a streamlined approach to enact targeted interventions in the department, and also facilitates the coordination of ongoing efforts in other departments in the School of Pharmacy, along with the graduate division and the greater UCSF campus. Our DEI committee meets every other week to outline concrete steps to make progress on our goals. Everyone in the department is welcome and we would love for you to join our committee. If you would like to join or if you have any suggestions you would like to bring to the group, please contact Emma Gunderson ([email protected]).
