Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo
Dean, 2013–2022
B. Joseph Guglielmo became dean in 2013, having served as interim dean since 2012. After earning a PharmD degree from the University of Southern California in 1978 and completing a pharmacy practice residency at UC San Francisco in 1979, he joined the UCSF pharmacy faculty. He is a professor in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy, which he chaired from 2006 until he was named dean. He holds the Troy C. Daniels Distinguished Professorship in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
He is internationally renowned for his research and clinical expertise regarding the safe, effective use of antimicrobials. Among other programs, he developed clinical pharmacy services in HIV/AIDS at UCSF and started the UCSF Medical Center Antimicrobial Stewardship Program. In 2007 he established the UCSF Medication Outcomes Center in order to improve medication safety practices at UCSF Medical Center. He is a staunch supporter of research and believes that the most important clinical research is shaped through the researcher's own patient care experiences. As Department of Clinical Pharmacy chair he saw a 40 percent increase in department faculty research and grant support. As dean he continues to practice in the UCSF Medical Center where he is an infectious diseases pharmacist supporting the UCSF Antimicrobial Stewardship Program.
As patients seek new and cost-effective health care with increasingly complicated disease states and medications, Guglielmo advocates for research on new ways for pharmacists to expand care for patients, especially in the community and particularly in the areas of preventative medicine and chronic disease management. He also supports strong relationships among clinical scientists and their upstream basic and translational scientist colleagues, as demonstrated through his own collaborations. It is through these close collaborations, he argues, that patients will ultimately benefit from therapeutics that act precisely and are used safely and effectively.
Guglielmo has taught doctor of pharmacy students, pharmacy residents and fellows, medical students and residents, and infectious diseases fellows for decades, and has mentored infectious diseases specialty pharmacist residents and fellows continuously since 1986. He has also mentored a number of international scholars, including Fogarty fellows. He is the recipient of many teaching awards, including the UCSF Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award, Resident Preceptor of the Year Awards, UCSF School of Pharmacy Long Teaching Awards, and the Academic Senate Distinction in Teaching Award. He is a staunch supporter of strong interprofessional education in the health sciences professions.
Guglielmo is the long-term editor of Applied Therapeutics: The Clinical Use of Drugs and the Handbook of Applied Therapeutics. He lectures worldwide on the safe, effective use of antimicrobials and other medications. He has published more than 175 peer-reviewed papers, book chapters, and books with an emphasis on anti-infective agents.
“We see a time when new, precise therapeutics are used safely and effectively to improve the health of people everywhere,” Guglielmo noted when he was named dean. “This view will drive my work.”
