Genentech-UCSF School of Pharmacy Diversity Fellowship

The Genentech-UCSF School of Pharmacy Diversity Fellowship will fund two UCSF PhD students for the 2025 calendar year, with priority opportunity to apply for a summer research internship in a Genentech laboratory.

Fellows selected for an internship will gain professional experience in an industry setting, preparing them for careers in the private sector and enabling them to make more informed career decisions.

Students will be drawn from graduate programs supported by School of Pharmacy faculty including Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics.

Program components

  • Program runs on calendar year (January to December 2025)
  • Funding for two students per year (stipend and tuition/fees)
  • Students will be named Genentech-UCSF Graduate Fellows for one year; fellows change every year
  • Students will apply for a summer internship at Genentech during the year that they are a fellow
  • Students will give a talk about their internship experience and have the opportunity to invite scientists to visit UCSF and give talks at a graduate program seminar series

Eligibility criteria

  • PhD student in good standing
  • Student in one of the following graduate programs: Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Chemistry and Chemical Biology, or Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacogenomics. Or a student in the lab of a faculty with an appointment in the departments of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, Pharmaceutical Chemistry or Clinical Pharmacy.
  • Completed all required coursework and passed qualifying exam (or expected before May 1, 2025)
  • Preference for third- or fourth-year students (but others will be considered)
  • Interested in exploring careers in industry
  • Meets the UCSF definition of underrepresented minority:
    • African American/Black
    • Asian: Filipino, Hmong or Vietnamese only
    • Hispanic/Latine
    • Native American/Alaskan Native
    • Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islander
    • Two or more races, when one or more are from the preceding racial and ethnic categories in this list

Selection criteria

  • Strong performance in graduate courses and on the qualifying exam
  • Good early progress on their PhD research project
  • Strong interpersonal skills and communication abilities
  • Stated interest in exploring a career in the biotechnology private sector

  • Ryan Hernandez and the chairs of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and the Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences will select and notify the two fellows for 2025 by Nov. 1, 2024
  • Funding starts Jan. 1, 2025
