How Pharmacogenomics is Influencing Patient Care: Q&A with Bani Tamraz, PharmD, PhD
Bani Tamraz, PharmD, PhD, associate professor in the UCSF School of Pharmacy’s Department of Clinical Pharmacy, played a key role in the launch of the UCSF Clinical Pharmacogenomics Program, California’s first program to test gene-drug interactions launched in 2023.
By embedding genetic data directly into clinical workflows so that prescribers receive real-time guidance on drug-gene interactions, Tamraz’s work is helping to redefine how medications are selected and managed.
In October of 2024, Tamraz, along with colleague Akinyemi Oni-Orisan, PharmD, PhD, was awarded a STRIPE Double Helix Award celebrating those who drive advancements in pharmacogenomics, working to improve outcomes by ensuring that treatments are tailored to each patient’s biology.
Read the complete Q&A with Tamraz to learn more about how pharmacogenetics is reshaping care at UCSF Health, building on research led by Professor of Health Economics and Health Services Research Kathryn Phillips, PhD (also in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy), about how the science of how individuals’ genetic makeup influences the safety and efficacy of certain types of drug therapies.
