A new UCSF School of Pharmacy initiative is redefining how pharmacy careers begin, and how they can grow. Launched this year, the PharmTech-to-PharmD Pathway Program offers participating pharmacy technicians in California free and supported preparation for competitive admission into schools of pharmacy, with the goal that each will apply to a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program within three years of completing the pathway.

Designed to help strengthen California’s pharmacist workforce, the program prioritizes participants from regions known as pharmacy deserts, where access to care is limited. The program is partially supported by the California Health Care Foundation.

Participants receive a personalized academic roadmap, mentorship, and monthly seminars that cover everything from completing prerequisite coursework to writing personal statements and preparing for interviews. Those who finish the program and apply to UCSF’s PharmD program are guaranteed an interview.

“I am a believer that sometimes people don’t do because they don’t know —  they just need a little extra support to help them to realize their dreams,” said Executive Vice Dean Sharon L. Youmans, PharmD, MPH, “This program is really to reach out to those who might think that going to pharmacy school is not in the cards for them.”

Early participants like Vanessa Pubill of Manteca and Bibiana Arroyo of Modesto are already experiencing how the program can transform both careers and communities.
