Benet earns Lifetime Achievement Award from Frankfurt Foundation Quality of Medicines

Leslie Benet, PhD, was honored with the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Frankfurt Foundation Quality of Medicines (FFQM), a premier scientific organization from Germany that is dedicated to promoting and recognizing research on medicinal products.

“Les is an icon in the world of pharmaceutical sciences, but it’s his tireless dedication to mentoring and leadership that has left an indelible mark on countless scientists, clinicians, and faculty,” said Kathy Giacomini, PhD, BSPharm, dean of the School. “This award is fitting for his lifetime of meaningful contributions to science and health care.”

Benet is a faculty member in—and former chair of—the UCSF Department of Bioengineering and Therapeutic Sciences, a joint department of the UCSF Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine.

The award recognizes Benet’s influential career bridging laboratory research on pharmacokinetics with advances in clinical pharmacology. His fifty-plus years in the field have produced over 620 publications—which have been collectively cited over 32,000 times—as well as 12 patents and seven books.

“The results of his work have led to the improvement of the properties of medicinal substances and the optimization of the dosage forms in which they are processed and ultimately used by patients,” wrote the FFQM in an announcement of the award. “In addition, the findings of his research have found a significant place in the guidelines for the approval of medicinal products not only in the USA but also in Europe. Because of this expertise, Les Benet is a sought-after speaker and panelist at international conferences in this field.”

The award ceremony will take place on May 15, 2023, in Frankfurt, as part of a scientific congress organized by the European Federation for Pharmaceutical Sciences (EUFEPS).
