Youmans inducted into Academy of Medical Educators

Leading the charge for a new curriculum, Vice Dean Sharon L. Youmans, PharmD ’85, MPH, was inducted into the UCSF Haile T. Debas Academy of Medical Educators (AME) on September 26. Youmans, who directs the School’s PharmD program, was key to the School’s recent revamping of the PharmD curriculum, designed to prepare student pharmacists to thrive in and advance our healthcare system.

The AME, housed in the School of Medicine, supports the teaching mission at UC San Francisco via teacher development activities and recognition of leading medical educators. The committee who inducted Youmans highlighted her “dedication to teaching, and her ability to connect with and encourage learners,” noting her enthusiasm “persist(s) despite the demands of overseeing a major curriculum change.”

In addition to working on the new curriculum, Youmans is in charge of administrative oversight of the PharmD program, including student affairs, educational support services, and assessment and accreditation. She has also been a force for diversity and inclusion initiatives.

Youmans, a School alumnus herself, joins School members Conan MacDougall, PharmD, MAS, BCPS, who was inducted to the Academy in 2015, and Sharya Bourdet, PharmD, a volunteer faculty member in our Department of Clinical Pharmacy who was inducted in 2016.

School of Pharmacy Dean B. Joseph Guglielmo, PharmD, said that “the Schools of Pharmacy and Medicine, and the campus, are fortunate to have such an accomplished, committed educator and leader.”
