Step 6: Set up your domain name if needed

If your site will be hosted on pharmacy.ucsf.edu or www.ucsf.edu, you may skip this step and go to Step 7: Set up your connection to the server.

What is a domain name?

In the context of Web development, a domain name is the name of the server which delivers Web pages to the world. For example, the name of this domain is pharmacy.ucsf.edu. Your domain name is important because it always appears as part of the URL which people use to access your site. For example: http://pharmacy.ucsf.edu.

How do I choose a domain name?

Choosing an effective domain name is typically a complicated process that requires examination of many topics. For a discussion, see Choosing a domain name and URLs.

How do I set up or change a domain name?

UCSF School of Pharmacy Web developers can request new domains or changes to existing domains by contacting the Associate Dean of Planning and Communications Susie Levings (levingss@pharmacy.ucsf.edu).
