Step 5: Buy hardware and software
Before buying new hardware or software, check Licensed Software to determine if UCSF has an existing site license for the goods that you want. For example, UCSF has a site license for certain SSH clients, so you don't need to make a new purchase unless you insist on using a different SSH client than UCSF offers. You may download site-licensed software from the link above and start using it immediately.
You may purchase computer hardware or software from any vendor. Many computer goods can be found at the UCSF computer store called The Technology Store. Its location at 500 Parnassus is convenient, and you can receive educational discounts on hardware and software. It provides complete computer systems as well as individual items, such as Zip drives, printers, or memory. It also sells a wide variety of software applications.
When you purchase from The Technology Store, use their order form (PDF, 1 page, 410 KB). Otherwise, use a School of Pharmacy Request for Order (RFO) form.

Choosing Hardware and Software
Web development at UCSF is very decentralized, and the network is typically open. (Check with your supervisor to determine if a firewall is present in your unit.)
Servers and development tools vary from unit to unit, and you are free to choose any web development hardware and software you like that is approved by your supervisor and allowed within your budget.
The School of Pharmacy Web site does not have a content management system, but we offer Templates that can simplify your development and maintenance process significantly.
