Intern Licenses for the California State Board Pharmacy

You're eligible for internship licensure as a first-year student pharmacist. Intern license applications must be filed by the end of the first quarter.

The California Board of Pharmacy requires completion of 1,500 hours for licensure, 900 of which must be completed in licensed pharmacies (hospital and community). The other 600 of these internship hours may be completed in experiences substantially related to the practice of pharmacy.

Upon graduation, we will certify that you have completed 600 hours in experience substantially related to the practice of pharmacy.

Student pharmacists in the Pharmaceutical Care Pathway may earn up to 500 hours of intern experience for experiences associated with CP 146 (up to 250 hours) and 147 (up to 250 hours). Approval of intern hours for experiences in CP 146 and 147 is at the discretion of the preceptor. Student pharmacists in the Health Services and Policy Research Pathway and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Pathway may enroll in CP 146 and/or CP 147 as elective APPEs on a space-available basis.

Student pharmacists are encouraged to discuss the potential for intern hours credit with the preceptor at the beginning of the rotation. It is the responsibility of the preceptor and the student pharmacist to ensure that the experiences for which hours are granted are consistent with the Intern Performance Guidelines outlined by the California Board of Pharmacy.

The actual number of hours may be fewer than the maximum 250 due to the nature of your activities in the APPE.

All affidavits related to intern hours earned while enrolled in CP 146 and 147 are signed by the student pharmacist and preceptor. We advise that student pharmacists have the preceptor sign off on hours earned through these courses at the end of the rotation.

No other APPEs are eligible to earn intern hours.
