Closure of Your @ucsf.edu E-mail Account

If you are graduating or have recently graduated, then in most cases your @ucsf.edu e-mail account will be closed after September 30 following your graduation date. (For special cases, see Continuing at UCSF.)

To prepare for your @ucsf.edu e-mail account closure, take the following steps soon after your date of graduation:

  1. Set up another e-mail account if you don't already have a Gmail, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail, or other e-mail account for personal use. Or, set up your UCSF alumni e-mail account.

To congratulate you on your graduation and to welcome you as a UCSF alum, the UCSF Pharmacy Alumni Association presents each graduate with the gift of a free 1-year subscription to alumni e-mail. This service enables you to set up an e-mail account such as firstname.lastname@alumni.ucsf.edu -- a great way to begin your career or job hunting. After the 1-year subscription expires:

    • pay a modest annual fee to continue the service, or
    • at no charge you can continue using your alumni.ucsf.edu account as a receive-only redirect (without being able to send mail from that account).

For details, see the e-mail message you were sent in early spring or contact Alumni Services.

  2. Notify appropriate parties that your @ucsf.edu e-mail address will no longer be available and give them the e-mail address you'd like them to use instead. For example:
    1. Send a mass mailing to everyone in your address book.
    2. Create a signature in Outlook, Outlook Web Access, or Entourage.
    3. It is particularly important to update your e-mail address with websites that use your e-mail address as your login. For example, if you created an account with a website using your UCSF e-mail address, neglect to update your account with your non-UCSF e-mail address, and then later forget your password, they will probably attempt to send you a password reset link to your UCSF e-mail address, to which you will no longer have access. Your access to your UCSF e-mail account cannot be restored, even for situations like these.
  3. Set a vacation notice (optional) - When you're ready to stop using your @ucsf.edu e-mail account, set a vacation notice that notifies others of your new e-mail address.

Saving Messages

To save (archive) e-mail messages from your @ucsf.edu e-mail account:

  1. If you haven't already, Set Up Outlook or Set Up Entourage.
  2. Archive messages using Outlook or Archive messages using Entourage.

No E-mail Forwarding from @ucsf.edu

Unfortunately, due to limited resources, technology constraints, and other factors, we are unable to forward your @ucsf.edu e-mail messages to another e-mail account (even your alumni e-mail account).

After Your @ucsf.edu E-mail Account Closes

Mail sent to it will behave as though your e-mail account does not exist. The message is returned to the sender with an error message stating that the message was undeliverable.

Other Computing Services Shall Also Close

Closure of your CLE/Moodle, WebCT, VPN, GALEN, and other accounts and services will also take place after September 30.

Communicating with Your Class

Through September 30

From July 1 through September 30, you will be able to communicate with your newly graduated class using a mailing list. Information about the mailing list is distributed to you by e-mail in spring/summer, and you will also find it listed on our List of LISTSERVs.

After September 30

If you want to continue a mailing list service for your class beyond September 30, consider forming a consensus with your classmates to switch to a third-party provider. Your class will need to designate one or more administrators for the mailing list. Some resources for choosing these services are:

You can also keep in touch by registering with the Alumni Directory.
