Pharmaceutical Care Pathway
The Pharmaceutical Care pathway is designed to offer students experiential patient care opportunities in a variety of practice settings, including hospitals, ambulatory clinics, poison centers, long-term skilled facilities, drug information, home care companies, and community pharmacies. Students will use their clinical knowledge and skills to manage patients with chronic illnesses, collaborate with other health care providers to provide cost-effective care, provide consultations on drug-related issues, educate patients and family members on the correct way to administer medications, and actively participate on the health care team. Expertise in this pathway will prepare students to work in numerous traditional and nontraditional settings, including hospitals, clinics, academia, industry, managed care organizations, and research. The Pharmaceutical Care pathway can accommodate all interested students.
Clinical Program Locations
Approximately 50% of students in the Pharmaceutical Care pathway complete their clinical curriculum outside of San Francisco as part of UCSF School of Pharmacy programs in Davis, Los Angeles/Orange County, Fresno, North Bay, San Diego, and the South Bay Area. Decentralization is a commitment the School has made to decrease the student population at clinical training sites in the San Francisco Bay Area. As a result, students in the Pharmaceutical Care pathway may be required to complete their pathway coursework outside of San Francisco. The clinical curriculum involves practice experiences at a variety of sites. As a result, a car may be a necessary resource during the clinical portion of the PharmD program.
