It's really the best possible time to be a pharmacist. To be a pharmacist in a department that's constantly pushing to use medication expertise in ways that anticipate the changing needs of patients -- is better yet.

"Consider the number and complexity of today's medications, all of the over-the-counter drugs that used to be prescription only, the scores of herbals and dietary supplements. Add to the mix the increasing cost of drugs and the lack of affordable health care, an aging population that requires more medications, the rise in chronic diseases, and the need for health professionals to manage it all within the context of an individual patient's social and economic situations, educational and cultural backgrounds, and lifestyle choices. It might be daunting to many, but that's what pharmacists do routinely.

"In the department of clinical pharmacy we look for new models of patient care that improve access and health care. We test our hypotheses and implement change where it counts -- in pharmacy practice, government policy, and consumer behavior. At the same time, we are privileged to teach the next generation of pharmacists to be the critical thinkers future patients will need."
