The in-residence, 10-week School of Pharmacy Summer Research Training Program gives you a good working knowledge of pharmacy-related laboratory research; clinical research involving patients; and social, behavioral and health policy research. The program is affiliated with the Graduate Division Undergraduate Summer Research Training Program, and it uses the same application form.
You will complete a mini research project under the supervision and mentorship of a UCSF School of Pharmacy faculty member and participate in a weekly science seminar to discuss your research project and those of your fellow student researchers.
At the conclusion of the program, you will share your research through an oral presentation and a poster session. You will attend special presentations by UCSF faculty members, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students, and you will learn about pursuing a doctor of philosophy (PhD) degree, which is the mainstay degree of most pharmaceutical scientists. During the course of this program, you will also learn about the professional PharmD degree and how the 2 degrees can be combined.
Enrollment is set at 2 to 4 college students who spend 10 weeks at UCSF working closely with faculty mentors. This program is designed to increase the diversity of students who enroll in UCSF professional pharmacy (PharmD) and graduate degree (PhD) programs. This research-oriented training program provides excellent insight to individuals considering careers as professors, clinicians, or researchers in all areas of pharmacy.
The Web pages for the Summer Research Training Program are oriented toward students interested in graduate school. However, the program is also open to students seeking dual professional/graduate degrees. Specifically, students interested in pursuing a PharmD/PhD program should indicate this on the application form.
