Wednesday, November 25, 7:30 AM: State or Trait? A Psycho-Oncology Perspective on Understanding the Symptom Experience over Time, presented by Laura Dunn, MD, Associate Professor and Director of Psycho-Oncology, UCSF. The identification and treatment of cancer patients and caregivers with elevated levels of distress—including depressive and anxiety symptoms—has the potential to improve quality of life and reduce overall costs of care. Such symptoms may fluctuate over time or stay relatively constant, yet little is known about what may predict these symptom trajectories, or who is at risk for increased symptoms over time. A greater understanding of the trajectories of symptoms would assist future efforts to identify and intervene with those with the greatest need. This talk will describe Dr. Dunn and group’s initial efforts to define groups of patients and caregivers with distinct trajectories of depressive and anxiety symptoms. Ample time will be allotted for interactive discussion of potential factors that may underlie these distinct subgroups.

Tuesday, December 1, 11:00 AM: Journalist Jeremy Adam Smith will read and discuss his critically acclaimed book The Daddy Shift, explaining how fatherhood has evolved beyond breadwinning, to include a capacity for caregiving as well. What happens when dads stay home and their partners support families—and what do reverse-traditional families mean for American society and public policy? Stay-at-home dads represent a logical culmination of fifty years of family change, from a time when the idea of men caring for children was literally inconceivable, to a new era when at-home dads are a small but growing part of the landscape. Their numbers and cultural importance will continue to rise—and Smith argues that they must rise, as the unstable, global, creative, technological economy makes flexible gender roles both more possible and more desirable. The stories of real people form the heart of this book: ethnically diverse couples from every part of the country and every walk of life - from working class to affluent, and both straight and gay. A book signing will follow the event from 1-1:30pm.

Wednesday, December 2, 4:15 PM: UCSF neuroscientist Adam Gazzaley, MD, PhD, will discuss the fact that our brains, despite extraordinary complexity and remarkable capabilities, have distinct limitations. The speed in which we process information, our short-term memory capacity and our ability to multitask can all be exceeded when demands are too great. Dr. Gazzaley explains how our brains manage the river of data that constantly floods it, how its capacities can be exceeded, and the consequences of this on our performance. He then presents a fascinating perspective on how our increasingly saturated world of media (e.g., pop-up windows, smart phones, texts, chat, emails), as well as growing expectations of immediate responsiveness, place excessive demands on our cognitive abilities. Failure of both young and older adults to successfully cope with this new environment has an impact on education and the workplace. The talk concludes with a discussion of whether the remedy may be within our own brains or will require modifying societal trends. Commonwealth Club
