What is the PHPM Practicum?
The Pharmaceutical Health Policy & Management (PHPM) Pathway offers a unique opportunity for students to acquire and apply the skills that will enable them to succeed as decision makers in business, management, clinical, and policy settings. The student should be able to apply skills gained in other required pathway courses, have an "end product" (e.g., publication), and make contacts for potential employment after graduation.
The Practicum is a one-year integrated requirement of the pathway accounting for a minimum of a total of 12 units to include:
- The Practicum Seminar Series (3 units)
- The Practicum Research Projects, or clerkships -- a 9-unit course of independent study that is conducted during a student's 3rd-year summer and 4th-year fall and winter quarters
In completing The Practicum Research Project:
- Students take courses during their 3rd and 4th years that provide them with the tools needed to embark on and complete their projects.
- Students receive one-on-one mentoring for The Practicum Research Project from a faculty advisor.
- During the 3rd year, students learn about potential research ideas by interacting with PHPM faculty and students, particularly during The Practicum Seminar.
- Students then select a research project and work closely with their adviser to design and conduct their study and interpret and report their findings.
