If you want to purchase the latest version of Office (e.g., so that you have a legal copy), we strongly recommend Microsoft's special offer for students linked below.
- Carefully review the terms and conditions and the system requirements before purchasing.
- In particular, these offers are good for installation on only 1 computer. If you want Office installed on more than 1 computer, consider the other editions instead, and carefully confirm how many installations are permitted before purchasing.
- To qualify, you need access to an e-mail address ending with .edu. If you don't already have this, you can log in to your UCSF email account at https://mail.ucsf.edu after receiving your email address, login, and password in your welcome letter from the Office of the Registrar.
- If you encounter a problem with any part of the ordering process, call Microsoft directly to report and resolve it.

About the Starter and Web Apps editions
These editions do not meet our requirements.
- Microsoft Office 2010 Starter edition does not include an authoring version of Microsoft PowerPoint, which is required.
- Microsoft Office Web Apps does not have the same feature set as the other editions of Office.

Service pack & critical updates required
Your computer must have the most recent service pack and all critical updates for Office installed. Windows users: visit Microsoft Update. Mac users: open any Office application, then select Check for Updates from the Help menu.
Microsoft Office not provided
Unfortunately, we do not provide Microsoft Office for you, so you are responsible for purchasing it. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required.

What if I have a Mac?
The curriculum does not require any software that is available only on Windows. There are some compatibility issues with exchanging Microsoft Office documents between Windows and Mac and among newer and older versions, but in essentially all cases these issues have workarounds or solutions.
Where do I buy computer stuff?
You may purchase computer hardware or software from any vendor.

If you have a version of Microsoft Office older than our specifications, you must upgrade to meet the requirement.
