Microsoft Office Requirement Fall 2004

For students entering in other class years, see Microsoft Office Requirement.

Microsoft Office Requirement

Minimum

Recommended

Windows

  • Office 2003 Pro or
  • Office XP Pro or
  • Office 2000 Pro

Office 2003 Pro

Macintosh

  • Office 2004 or
  • Office v. X or
  • Office 2001

  • Office 2004 or
  • Office v. X

For Windows

Standard, Small Business, and Student and Teacher editions of Microsoft Office do not include the required database application called Microsoft Access, so they do not meet our requirements unless you separately purchase Microsoft Access 2003, Access XP, or Access 2000. See [What's in the Office 2003 Editions?][link defunct] for details.

For Macintosh

The database application called Microsoft Access, which we require for Windows users, is not available for Mac OS. See the "What if I have a Mac?" sidebar and [Office 2004][link defunct] for details.

Service Pack & Critical Updates Required

Your computer should also have the most recent service pack and all critical updates for Office installed from Office Update (Windows) or Office for Mac downloads (Macintosh).

Microsoft Office Not Provided

Unfortunately, we do not provide Microsoft Office for you, so you are responsible for purchasing it. Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are required. Microsoft Access is required for Windows users.

Older Versions of Microsoft Office

If you have versions of Microsoft Office applications older than our specifications, you must upgrade to meet the requirement. If you meet the requirement except for certain required applications such as Microsoft Access (e.g., if you already have Microsoft Office XP or 2003 Standard), you must make an additional purchase (e.g., Microsoft Access) or upgrade to meet the requirements.

Questions?

Send e-mail to Web & Data Services Manager Frank Farm at farmf@pharmacy.ucsf.edu.

Next Software Requirement: Additional Software

What version of Office does my computer have?

To determine what version of Microsoft Office you have, choose Help > About (Windows) or choose About from the Apple menu (Macintosh) from within any Office application.

To determine which Office applications are installed, choose Start > Programs (Windows) or look in your Microsoft Office folder (Macintosh).

To install any Office applications that you know you have purchased but do not appear to be installed, run the installer on your Microsoft Office CD-ROM.

What if I have a Mac?

The curriculum does not require any software that is available only on Windows. There are some compatibility issues with exchanging Microsoft Office documents between Windows and Mac and among newer and older versions, but in essentially all cases these issues have workarounds or solutions.

Where do I buy computer stuff?

You may purchase computer hardware or software from any vendor.
