Set Up E-mail
Your UCSF E-mail Account
Your UCSF e-mail account is created for you when you begin your first year, and you use the same e-mail account until you are no longer a student. For most students, your e-mail address will be preferredfirstname.lastname@ucsf.edu. For example, claudius.galen@ucsf.edu.
Choose an E-mail Option
To set up e-mail for your primary desktop or laptop computer, choose any of the following options.

How much e-mail storage space do I get?
100 MB total (inbox and saved messages and attachments combined). If you run out of space, see Mailbox too full.
The amount of space you're limited to on the server is also 100 MB total (inbox and saved messages and attachments combined). However, with Outlook and Entourage, you can also store messages on your computer, and this is limited only by the amount of disk space on your computer, which is always a lot more than 100 MB. To learn how to store messages on your computer, or if you run out of space on the server, see Mailbox too full.
How do I choose?
This option is better if you frequently need to access your new and saved e-mails from multiple locations and you can keep your inbox and saved messages under 100 MB.
These options are better if you need to save more than 100 MB of e-mail and you don't frequently need to access your e-mail from multiple locations.
These options are also preferred if you carry your laptop with you frequently.
You can also use a combination of these options. For example, you might have Outlook for Windows or Entourage for Mac OS on a desktop computer at home, but you can also use mail@UCSF (Outlook Web Access) from any web browser during the day. When you check e-mail at home in the evening, the new messages you kept in your mail@UCSF inbox earlier in the day appear when you open Outlook on your desktop computer.
We strongly recommend that you log in to Outlook Web Access at least once, even if you don't plan to use it, so that you know the option is available if you need it later.
