Quality Assurance: Preventing Medication Errors

Overview
This self-study course enables pharmacists to obtain 3 hours (0.3 CEU) of continuing professional education credit. It provides information about:
- The incidence, cost and impact of medication errors.
- SB 1339 and its accompanying regulation.
- Quality assurance principles and strategies applicable to pharmacy.
- Legal and risk management issues related to medication errors.
- How consumers can take an active role in preventing medication error.
Sample Objectives
- Describe at least 5 requirements of Title 16 CCR, Section 1711, the quality assurance regulation.
- List key components of an effective quality assurance program.
- Describe "best practices" in a community pharmacy that would reduce the potential for medication errors.
- Describe "best practices" in an institutional pharmacy that would reduce the potential for medication errors.
- Describe an effective strategy for dealing with patients after a medication error has been discovered.
- List 3 sources of additional information about medication safety.
